Protective role of Pandanus tectorius Parkinson ex Du Roi in diabetes, hyperlipidemia, liver and kidney dysfunction in alloxan diabetic rats

Abstract Background Diabetes mellitus (DM), an endocrine disease is characterized by increased level of blood glucose. may affect other functions the body and organs including, renal function lipid metabolism. Pandanus tectorius ( P. tectorius) Parkinson ex Du Roi a small tree used in folk medicine treatment many diseases. Methods rats was induced intraperitoneal injection alloxan at dose 100 mg/kg weight for 3 days. Water ethanol extracts root, stem leave were given to 200 day 3. Rats sacrificed on 4 after 12 h fasting. Serum glucose biochemical parameters like liver enzymes; [alanine aminotransferases (ALT), aspartate (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)], kidney (urea & creatinine), profile [total cholesterol, HDL LDL cholesterol triglycerides] coronary artery risk index (CRI) estimated serum. Antioxidant potential, polyphenol content phytochemical constituents different parts also determined. Results showed that water extract root produced maximum fall sugar diabetic rats. Extracts all three plant significantly dropped urea creatinine with reduction observed root. P.tectorius positive effect enzymes bringing them closer normal range comparison control Phytochemical screening indicated presence flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins saponin . In DPPH free radical scavenging test highest antioxidant potential found roots, while good activity.
